Bonamici: Don’t Turn Back the Clock on Women’s Health Care
After Historic Marches, Congresswoman Speaks Up for Reproductive Rights
WASHINGTON, DC [01/24/17] — Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) spoke on the floor of the US House of Representatives in support of the right of women to make their own reproductive health decisions.

“On Saturday, I joined the peaceful march in our nation’s capital with hundreds of thousands of women and men. And millions more marched in Oregon, across the country, and around the world to demand that our voices be heard,” Bonamici said on the House floor. “This legislation – one of the majority’s first priorities under the Trump Administration – won’t create jobs, it will create barriers. Barriers to reproductive healthcare for countless women. It will disproportionately affect low-income women, young women, women of color, women in rural communities, and immigrant women. This bill turns back the clock. It puts women’s lives at risk. Restricting abortion does not make it go away – it makes it unsafe.”
The House voted on legislation that restricts abortion coverage for women with private insurance plans available through health care exchanges. The legislation also makes the Hyde Amendment permanent so that no federal funds—including Medicaid coverage—can go toward abortion coverage.
