Bonamici Statement on Passage of Amended Department of Homeland Security Funding Bill

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) released the following statement after the House of Representatives approved the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill.

“The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for preventing acts of terrorism, guarding Americans against cyberattacks, disaster support, and many other measures that strengthen our country’s overall safety. There was a bipartisan bill that would have funded the Department to allow it to carry out its critical mission. Instead of working together to pass that bill, however, this bill was amended with several detrimental immigration policies, including policies that would result in the deportation of young people who were brought to this country as infants and have only known life in the United States.”

“The amendments to this funding bill mean that the Department will use valuable resources to tear apart families and end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program resulting in the deportation of young people who grew up in the U.S. In only the second week of a new session of Congress, the House should be working together to reinforce the country’s security, not passing bills that have little if any chance of becoming law.”
