Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici Statement on National Consumer Protection Week
Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici released the following statement on National Consumer Protection Week, which is recognized from March 4 – 10, 2012.
“Consumer confidence is a major driver of economic growth in our country. Businesses large and small succeed when their customers know that they are being treated fairly and honestly. Exploitation of consumers has no place in our marketplace, whether in the form of violations of privacy, identity theft, or fraud. I applaud the industry partners and community organizations who work with state, local, and federal governments to educate the public about their rights and put an end to unfair practices. We must keep working toward a system that balances free enterprise with appropriate regulations that put everyone—individuals and businesses—on a level playing field.
This year, we should give special recognition to all of the Attorneys General and public and private sector consumer advocates who worked tirelessly to negotiate the National Mortgage Settlement. This landmark agreement marks an important shift in the way the financial industry deals with distressed homeowners. All Americans deserve to know that lenders and servicers are being held accountable when working with homeowners. The settlement is a critical first step that will provide needed financial relief to struggling families, including many in Oregon. We must remain vigilant to ensure similar abuses of our financial system are curtailed before they happen. I encourage consumers to visit the official National Consumer Protection Week website to learn more about their rights and how to protect themselves from fraud.”
