Floor Statement Drawing Attention to Baby Fatemeh, Human Toll of Trump’s Executive Order
Thank you Mr. Speaker.
Last week I joined massive protests at the Portland international airport against President Trump’s unconstitutional executive order. With this order, America turned its back on refugees and betrayed religious freedoms.
Caught in the middle of this harmful executive order is four-month-old Fatemah. She was scheduled to have life-saving open heart surgery at the world-class Oregon Health and Science University next week.
To prepare for the surgery, Fatemah’s family did everything right. They traveled to Dubai to complete the required paperwork. Fatemah’s family cared for her delicate health and prepared her for the journey to Portland.
That is until President Trump signed the executive order temporarily banning people from seven countries including Fatemah’s home country of Iran.
Keeping four month old babies out of our country doesn’t make us safer. It puts her life in danger and diminishes the United States in the eyes of the world. My office has reached out to Fatemah’s family in Oregon to be of assistance, but I’m heartbroken that this even happened in the first place.
I yield back.
