House Passes Bonamici-Backed Bill to Stop Robocalls

December 4, 2019
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC [12/4/19] – Today the House passed bipartisan legislation supported by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) to stop unwanted robocalls.

The TRACED Act will protect families, individuals, and businesses from unwanted calls and texts by establishing needed safeguards and requiring carriers to provide improved authentication and blocking technology. It also strengthens enforcement against unlawful robocalls.

“Unwanted robocalls are a plague,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “I’ve spoken with many Oregonians who have been overwhelmed by unwanted calls that interfere with their daily lives and expose them to scams. The bipartisan TRACED Act takes a stand against these aggravating calls and will finally provide relief for our families and communities.”

Oregonians have already received more than 399 million robocalls this year. An estimated 47.8 billion robocalls were placed in the U.S. during 2018, representing a 64 percent increase since 2016.

The Senate has already passed the TRACED Act, and it is expected to be signed into law. Bonamici sponsored the House’s initial version, the Stopping Bad Robocalls Act, which the House passed in July.
