Bonamici Makes Deliveries to Meals on Wheels Recipients in Washington County, Announces New Bill Benefiting Seniors
Beaverton, Ore.— Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici emphasized the importance of Meals on Wheels while packing and delivering meals today in Washington County. Bonamici assisted volunteers and hand-delivered meals to seniors in Beaverton.
Last year, Meals on Wheels served more than 250,000 meals to more than 4,000 seniors in Washington County. About 88 percent of those recipients are homebound and ten percent live at or below the poverty level.
“This program provides a critical service to homebound seniors who have no access to fresh food,” said Joan Smith, Meals on Wheels People’s Executive Director. “Many rely on Meals on Wheels for their only hot meal of the day and the volunteers may be the only social interaction they experience.”
During today’s event Bonamici announced that she will introduce a bill next week to re-authorize the Older Americans Act (OAA), which funds Meals on Wheels and other senior programs. The bill would extend funding for the legislation through 2018, but also includes new provisions based on input from seniors’ advocates.
“Seniors should not have to struggle to afford quality food and homecare,” Bonamici said. “With this bill, I am working to ensure that our seniors and their caregivers have the services, resources, and support they need as our aging population grows.”
