Bonamici Statement on Trump’s Budget Proposal

Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC [03/16/17] – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) released the following statement after President Trump released his budget proposal:

“A budget is a statement of values. With the proposal released today, President Trump is saying more clearly than ever that he does not share the values we hold in Oregon. We invest in our people and our communities because we know we are stronger when we support our schools, infrastructure, and critical safety nets that help working families succeed and seniors thrive. This budget shows a complete disregard for the challenges we face as a nation and world. By slashing the Environmental Protection Agency, we will continue to fall behind in curbing climate change and preserving clean air and drinking water. Reducing investments in the State Department undermines decades of diplomatic efforts that have both made our country a global leader and reduced threats of war and terrorism. Diverting precious dollars away from our public schools to failed voucher programs will leave too many students without the knowledge and skills they need to get ahead. Eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts is short-sighted and counterproductive; their small investments go directly into our local communities and grow our economy. And outrageously, these cuts are proposed so the President can needlessly increase defense spending.

“This budget is not only immoral; it is unrealistic and Congress must reject it.

“I will not allow the President's dangerous budget proposal to go unchallenged, and I will continue to fight these massive and destructive cuts. We must reject this budget and focus on growing our economy to bring good jobs and stability to our communities and families, on protecting our planet for future generations, and on keeping our country safe with smarter investments in cybersecurity and intelligence. This budget fails to accomplish anything but generating headlines for the President.”
