Bonamici: Trump Failed the American People in His First Week in Office

January 27, 2017
Press Release

BEAVERTON, OR [1/27/2017]-- Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) issued the following statement on President Trump’s first week in office:

“On election night, President Trump pledged to ‘bind the wounds of division,’ and in his inaugural address he pledged to serve the American people. But over the last seven days he has failed to live up to that pledge.

"Trump has raised serious doubts about America’s commitment to global leadership and our partners around the world.

"Trump’s appalling suggestion to lift the ban on torture would violate international law and jeopardize our national security.

"Trump has betrayed American values by denying safe haven to Muslim refugees who are fleeing violence and war. This country was founded on the principles of religious liberty and freedom from religious persecution.

"Trump’s order to resurrect the Keystone and Dakota Access Pipelines will increase carbon emissions, infringe on tribal sovereignty and private property rights, and raise the potential for oil spills.

"Trump’s outlandish, unsupported claim about voter fraud in the recent election is irresponsible. And his failure to acknowledge Russia’s interference in our democratic process is reckless.

"Trump’s federal hiring freeze stops the VA from hiring doctors and nurses, leaving many of Oregon and America’s veterans without vital care.

"Trump’s executive order ending enforcement of the Affordable Care Act threatens the stability of the health insurance market including coverage for 20 million people and protections for millions of others.

"Trump’s proposed wall is a political stunt, a financial boondoggle, and a slap in the face to immigrants, who are our neighbors, co-workers, friends, and family members.

"Trump’s move to silence scientists and government agencies can’t change the fact that climate change is real and caused by humans.

"It is our responsibility as Americans to speak out against these actions and stand up for our shared values: human rights, diversity, and respect.

"If Republican leadership in Congress tries to undermine voting rights, tear apart immigrant families, interfere with veterans’ health care, silence scientists, reinstate torture, privatize Social Security or Medicare, or repeal the Affordable Care Act, I will fight every step of the way with everything I have.”
