Rep. Bonamici Highlights Local Businesses on Small Business Saturday
Hillsboro, OR – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) highlighted the benefits of shopping local today while visiting stores in downtown Hillsboro on Small Business Saturday.
Hillsboro City Council President Aron Carleson joined Congresswoman Bonamici, and the two met business owners and spoke with shoppers who were out on the annual shopping holiday.
“As we start the holiday shopping season, it’s important to remember our local businesses and the role they play in cities like Hillsboro,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “Money spent at small businesses stays in our communities. Washington County is home to many new manufacturing companies, restaurants, and tech startups, all of which bring jobs to the region.”
More than 99 percent of companies in the United States are considered small businesses, and over the last 15 years small businesses were responsible for creating 64 percent of net new jobs.
“Hillsboro’s small businesses provide vital economic stimulus for the city. Supporting local stores strengthens our community, creates jobs, and helps connect residents,” City Council President Carleson said. “Events like Small Business Saturday highlight the unique shops and restaurants Hillsboro has to offer and serve as a reminder of the importance of community investment. As Hillsboro continues to grow, shopping local is critical for our businesses and neighborhoods to continue to thrive.”
Congresswoman Bonamici is a cosponsor of H. Res. 728 to designate November 29, 2014 as Small Business Saturday and increase awareness of the value of locally-owned small businesses.
