Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, a member of the Education and the Workforce Committee, praised the passage of the bipartisan Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), saying it will help create more jobs and benefit the economy.

“To strengthen our country's productivity and economic vitality, we need to strengthen our workforce,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “This legislation invests in American workers through more educational and skills-based training. If we want to see a strong economic recovery, we must put our workers first.”

As the primary federal workforce development program, WIOA includes job training, adult education, and vocational rehabilitation programs. This reauthorization includes several new provisions, including a requirement for states to implement a strategic plan that includes training, employment services, adult education, and vocational rehabilitation through a coordinated system.

“The country is facing a skills gap, and this reauthorization begins the process of filling that gap through training and vocational services,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “WIOA will equip our workforce with the skills to succeed in the 21st century economy and encourage growth and innovation within our businesses.”

Congresswoman Bonamici has introduced legislation that directly addresses the skills gap. The WISE Investment Act would foster collaboration among local businesses and workforce training programs to identify in-demand skills and provide training opportunities to help fill those gaps. Congresswoman Bonamici will continue to work to pass the legislation through the House.

“One of the best ways to help our country overcome the lingering impacts of the recession is to invest in our workers,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “They deserve greater opportunities to achieve workforce stability and to do that we need to provide them with adequate tools, including job training, education, and support services. This bipartisan legislation highlights the value that Congress places on American workers and the crucial role they play in the success of our economy.”

WIOA passed the House 415-6.
