The fantastic college-admissions scandal calls to mind one of the most famous sayings in American life: “We have met the enemy and he is us.” Its wise author, the great cartoonist Walt Kelly (he created Pogo) would have gotten a kick out of explanations for the alleged fraud, which have become an exercise in turning away from the mirror and blaming someone or something else.

Most prominently, there is the explanation on the political left, that the scandal signifies, yet again, the country’s disparities of wealth, privilege and class, which are “unfair.” From this premise flows the argument that too many of these sorts of people, or their children, have access to elite colleges, and some aggressive leveling is in order. A Democratic member of the House Education Committee, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, says, “This shows we have to focus even more on equity.”
