Oregon Lawmakers Applaud Steps by US Postal Service to Address Forest Grove Facility
Bonamici, Wyden, Merkley Called on USPS to Address Current Building’s Deficiencies
WASHINGTON, DC [04/09/16] – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) applauded the United States Postal Service (USPS) for taking steps to resolve ongoing maintenance and structural issues at the Forest Grove Post Office by announcing the search for a new location.
Earlier this year, the lawmakers called on the USPS to resolve the current building’s deficiencies. Although some steps were taken to address the problems, many issues remain unresolved. USPS announced it will hold a public meeting and comment period on relocating retail services to a new location.
“Forest Grove deserves a Post Office that is safe and welcoming for its employees and the community,” said Congresswoman Bonamici. “I visited the Post Office earlier this week and saw firsthand the disappointing conditions that have prompted concern in the community. We can do better, and I’m glad to see the Postal Service taking steps to resolve the situation.”
“I am pleased the voices of the Forest Grove community will be heard, and strongly encourage everybody to attend this meeting in order for the Postal Service to hear clearly how residents and businesses want this issue to be resolved quickly and effectively,” said Sen. Wyden. “I am proud to have worked with Forest Grove officials, Senator Merkley and Congresswoman Bonamici to support the city’s reasonable expectation that its Post Office should be maintained to a high standard with as little disruption as possible for the businesses and residents who rely on a fully functioning Post Office.”
“The local post office is the heart of a community, and the Forest Grove community deserves a post office that is safe, functional and accessible for all,” said Sen. Merkley. “I thank the USPS for taking action to address this problem and for listening to community concerns. I hope they are able to act quickly to come to a solution.”
On Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 6 pm, USPS Real Estate Specialist Greg Shelton will host a public meeting regarding the Forest Grove Post Office. For more information click here.
