Connect 2 Congress: Bonamici says start with universal background checks

February 23, 2018

PORTLAND, Ore. — U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Oregon, says there should be comprehensive gun control legislation, starting with universal background checks and closing the "gun show loophole."

KATU's Lincoln Graves interviewed the congresswoman, who represents cities like Beaverton, Hillsboro and all the way out to the coast like Cannon Beach, Seaside and Warrenton, Friday at the KATU studios about gun control following last week's deadly school shooting in Florida that killed 17.

We need to get these assault weapons off the street and out of the hands of people," she said. "There is no reason in the world why somebody should be able to walk into a school with an assault weapon and kill children."

She said gun control legislation can be done without violating the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.

She also discussed the opioid epidemic and what needs to be done to deal with that issue.
