Oregon business and civic leaders reflect on Gert Boyle's legacy
November 4, 2019
Oregon businesses are known for creativity, authenticity and irreverence. Columbia Sportswear's Gert Boyle exuded all three.
Boyle, who died Sunday, served as the company's chair since 1970. She also served as president from 1970 to 1988. In addition to being the face of some iconic Columbia advertising, "Ma" Boyle as she was affectionately known, was one of Oregon's biggest philanthropists, giving more than $100 million to Oregon Health & Science University.
"Gert Boyle truly was One Tough Mother. With a unique combination of persistence, hard work, fearlessness, and a wicked sense of humor, Gert made Columbia Sportswear the company it is today," said U.S. Rep Suzanne Bonamici. "Columbia — and Oregon — will miss her leadership."
