'Poster child' for policy failure: Will EPA ban asbestos?

March 12, 2021

Still, Oregon Democratic co-sponsors Sen. Jeff Merkley and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici remain committed. During a confirmation hearing last month for EPA Administrator Michael Regan, Merkley emphasized asbestos and the TSCA evaluation (Greenwire, Feb. 4). Martina McLennan, a spokesperson for Merkley, said the senator "remains extremely concerned" about the lack of a U.S. asbestos ban, as well as by the 30% increase in imports last year. "As a result, Americans are unknowingly buying products — some of which will be used by children — that contain this deadly substance, every day," McLennan said via email, adding that Merkley is in conversations with senators about passing his bill. In a statement, Bonamici also renewed her commitment to the bill, noting "significant progress" on the issue last year. "I'm looking forward to getting this bill across the finish line to save lives," she said.
