Vote set on legislation to fight acidification

April 8, 2019

Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.) has an idea for how to battle ocean acidification: Give prizes to the people who come up with the best ideas.

A House Science, Space and Technology panel will vote tomorrow on Kilmer's bipartisan bill, H.R. 1921, the "Ocean Acidification Innovation Act of 2019."

It does not mandate any specific types of prizes, but the bill would allow federal agencies to use existing funds to conduct prize competitions to increase research, monitoring and management of ocean acidification.

The bill's co-sponsors include Republican Reps. Don Young of Alaska and Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington and Democratic Rep. Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon.

Bonamici said the bill "will encourage collaboration and spur innovative strategies to mitigate and adapt to ocean acidification."
