In the last legislative session Oregon Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, D-Portland, introduced the Child Care is Essential Act to establish a $50 billion Child Care Stabilization Fund to give grants to families and providers, but it stalled in the senate.

The new measure would go further than the 2019 proposal (House Concurrent Resolution 52), which was cosponsored by 102 members, including Oregon Democrats Suzanne Bonamici and Peter DeFazio. The 2019 resolution never advanced beyond the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The National Apprenticeship Act of 2021 defines states' responsibilities in setting up and running the program with annual federal funding and requires the federal departments of Education and Labor to support the creation and expansion of youth apprenticeships, college consortiums and data sharing. The bill is also led by Democratic Reps. Donald Norcross of New Jersey (D) and Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon as well as Republican Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, David McKinley of West Virginia and Don Bacon of Nebraska.

In late 2020, DeFazio, Oregon's two U.S. Senators and Reps. Earl Blumenauer, Kurt Schrader and Suzanne Bonamici sent the Corps of Engineers a letter asking for additional support for harbor repairs and improvements at Coos Bay, Depoe Bay and Tillamook. "Our harbors along the Oregon coast can be particularly challenging due to unpredictable weather, the increasing intensity of storms, and especially dangerous wave conditions at our entrance channels," the group wrote.

Environmentalists and state and local governments have already taken the EPA to court over the final rule in two separate lawsuits, broadly on procedural grounds. Biden is set to issue a memo today mandating evidence-based decision-making in federal agencies, but because the Trump policy shift came out as a final rule, the Biden administration would have to undertake another rulemaking to strike it from the books. The letter was led by Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.), and includes Reps. Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), Don Beyer (D-Va.), and Diana DeGette (D-Colo.).

"The final rule essentially blocks access to the best available science, which could jeopardize the health and livelihood of every person in this country and disproportionately burden Black, Indigenous, and communities of color who are often still waiting for the EPA to fulfill its promise of clean air and clean water," the lawmakers wrote. The letter was signed by Reps. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.), Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), Don Beyer (D-Va.) and Diana DeGette (D-Colo.). Tonko chairs the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change. Beyer co-chairs the Safe Climate Caucus.

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-District 1, said she hopes to work with the Biden administration to beat COVID, address climate, and improve our country's roads and bridges. "These are big challenges ahead, but I'm confident that with a new and willing administration and many colleagues who are committed to meeting those challenges, we will do that," said Bonamici. "President Biden was realistic and truthful about the challenges ahead, but also very hopeful about the ability when we set aside our differences to get things done for this great country."

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici said she shared a number of priorities with the incoming administration, including returning the U.S. to the Paris Climate Agreement, securing a path to citizenship for Dreamers and other immigrants fleeing violence, making infrastructure investments, providing debt relief to student loan borrowers, extending the federal eviction moratorium and resuming the ban on federal executions.
