Bonamici Announces $1.29 Million in Grants for Clatsop County Fire Departments

September 23, 2021
Press Release

BEAVERTON, or [9/23/21] - Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) announced that fire departments in Clatsop County will receive $1,295,238 through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. This funding will be used to provide firefighters with improved National Fire Protection Association compliant tools and equipment.

“Our firefighters and first responders work hard day in and day out to keep our communities safe,” Bonamici said. “This critical funding will make sure that they are well-equipped to protect families and visitors in Clatsop County and stay safe while on the job. Federal funding is especially important for smaller, rural fire departments that struggle to raise the revenue they need for new equipment. I will continue to advocate for resources for the North Coast and our fire departments.”

“The Assistance to Firefighters Grants will allow us to replace two-thirds of the emergency radio capability in the county, replace 38-year-old extrication equipment, and replace hoses that were over twenty-five-years old,” said Cannon Beach Fire Chief Marc Reckmann, who also manages grants for the Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District. “The AFG grants are fundamental, especially to rural fire departments. Districts like Hamlet have a $30,000 annual budget and cannot afford this equipment, yet are still providing the same services as bigger departments.”

The following awards for operations and safety have been announced since August 6, 2021:

  • $268,571 for the Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District in Seaside
  • $160,952 for the City of Warrenton Fire District
  • $574,571 for the Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District
  • $46,380 for the Cannon Beach Rural Fire Protection District
  • $200,000 for the Knappa Fire District in Astoria
  • $44,761 for the Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District in Seaside

The AFG program awards grants directly to fire departments to enhance their response capabilities and to protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel.
