Bonamici Applauds Passage of Bill to Protect Voting Rights

March 3, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC [03/03/21] –Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) helped the House pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act, to protect voting rights and increase government accountability.

H.R. 1 includes provisions modeled on Oregon's election laws to increase voter registration and expand vote-by-mail. The reform package also addresses campaign finance, voting rights, election security, accountability for government officials, and more.

"Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democratic republic, yet we have seen many examples across the country of how elections can be vulnerable to attack or voter suppression," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "We must protect the voice of the people and put an end to the voter disenfranchisement efforts that are too prevalent, especially in communities of color. H.R. 1 will protect and expand voting rights while also making important reforms to address money in politics, increase transparency, and fight corruption.

"I'm glad this important legislation follows Oregon's lead, HR 1 will make voting more accessible by expanding vote-by-mail, automatic voter registration, and online registration. The bill will help protect our elections and make our government more responsive to the voices of the people. I urge the Senate to take it this bill up and pass it soon."
