Bonamici Applauds State of the Union’s Focus on Equity, Highlights Education
Washington, D.C. – Joined by an Oregon high school teacher, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) emphasized the importance of investing in education following President Obama’s State of the Union address.
“I’m glad that the President highlighted the importance of public education. My guest, a high school teacher from Beaverton, reminds us of the real policy implications of our work,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “David Wilkinson has taught at Westview High School for more than 13 years, and is dedicated to quality public education. We must do more to elevate his profession and provide teachers like David with support they need to prepare and inspire the next generation.”
President Obama also outlined an agenda to bridge the income inequality gap, highlighting policies to help working families get ahead and realize the benefits of the improving economy.
“Although our economy is showing great improvement, many working families are not feeling it,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “Parents are still struggling to provide basic necessities for their families while their incomes are not keeping pace with costs. The President proposed several provisions, including a tax cut for the middle class. For the economic recovery to help all, we must focus our efforts to support middle-class families. Parents can use these proposed tax savings to buy their children school supplies or groceries, resulting in greater overall economic stimulus.”
Congresswoman Bonamici praised the President’s proposal for paid sick leave and free community college as a way to help working Americans get ahead.
“Providing paid leave so parents can care for their sick child or elderly parent leads to more productive employees and healthier families. As illustrated by a recent announcement from Intel, policies that promote parental leave are good for business,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “And providing two free years of community college puts young people on a path toward a career without burdening them with debt. It’s an investment that will pay off for our workforce and ultimately our economy. I applaud the President for putting working families first and developing a plan to help them succeed.”
