Bonamici Backs House Resolution to Condemn Police Brutality

June 1, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC [06/01/20] –Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) supports a House resolution to condemn police brutality, racial profiling, and the excessive use of force against Black Americans.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) introduced the resolution after the killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many other Black Americans at the hands of law enforcement. Bonamici is an early cosponsor of the legislation.

"Police brutality and racial profiling are corrosive and inflict death and pain on our communities," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "We cannot bring back those whose lives have been lost, but we can hold law enforcement accountable for their actions and make systemic changes to save the lives of Black Americans and other people of color. I stand with our communities of color, which is why I'm co-sponsoring Congresswoman Pressley's resolution to condemn police brutality, racial profiling, and excessive use of force. These cruel and unjust practices cannot continue."

The full text of the resolution can be found here. In addition to condemning police violence, it calls for the end of militarized policing practices, greater effort to reduce excessive force, and stringent oversight. It also calls on the Department of Justice to investigate individual instances of police brutality, establish independent civilian review boards, more.

Bonamici has repeatedly spoken out about the unjust killing of George Floyd, Black Americans, and other people of color. As a supporter of peaceful protest, she joined the Beaverton Black Parent Union for a Black Family Unity Walk on Sunday.
