Bonamici: Bill to Fund Government Plays Politics With Our Economy, Risks Government Shutdown

September 20, 2013

Washington, D.C. –Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today released the following statement in opposition to a continuing resolution that would make funding the government through December 15 contingent upon defunding the Affordable Care Act.

“A government shutdown risks an economic slowdown at a time when many Oregon families and small businesses are still struggling. It is essential that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle work together to keep the government open.

“The continuing resolution passed by the House today unnecessarily inserts contentious political issues into an already difficult debate. It forgoes thoughtful lawmaking, which is what our constituents expect.

“The bill attempts to defund the Affordable Care Act while continuing the harmful across-the-board budget cuts that took effect earlier this year, and it puts foreign creditors before the needs of the American people.

“The soundness of the American economy should not be put at risk for political reasons, but that’s exactly what may occur because of this legislation. It’s time for members of Congress to come together in good faith and craft a reasonable compromise.”
