Bonamici Highlights Benefit to Patients and Local Universities in 21st Century Cures Act

July 10, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act.

“Scientific research and technology have been at the center of innovation and discovery for decades. Providing support for groundbreaking medical research is critical, which is why I voted for the bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act. The bill includes more than $8 billion in additional funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and it includes provisions to accelerate the FDA approval process for products used in the treatment of many diseases. Oregon’s research universities and organizations like the Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon State University, and the University of Oregon receive NIH funding for cancer and Alzheimer’s research, bioscience research, and more. Additionally, it is estimated that every dollar of NIH funding generates more than $2 in local economic growth. Investing in the research and discovery of new cures for debilitating diagnoses and diseases saves lives and also grows the economy."
