“As a community college graduate, I know firsthand the important role of community colleges in making higher education accessible and preparing people for successful careers,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “Portland Community College is a leader in our region and offers an inclusive community for its diverse students. PCC is also making strides in closing the skills gap. Additionally PCC is a key partner in developing the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center, which will bring education and industry together to create a world-class manufacturing and job training center in Columbia County. I invited President Mitsui as my guest to the Joint Session to remind President Trump that increasing access to higher education institutions will provide all students with a path to good jobs and a brighter future.”

“I am deeply honored to have been invited by Congresswoman Bonamici to attend the President’s Joint Session Address, and to represent Portland Community College and the needs of community colleges and our students across Oregon,” said PCC President Mark Mitsui.

Mitsui has been President of Portland Community College since the fall of 2016. Previously, Mitsui worked in the Obama Administration as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Colleges in the Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education.

Bonamici is the Vice Ranking Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. She wrote legislation aimed at helping struggling student loan borrowers avoid default and access affordable payments plans. Bonamici, a member of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Caucus, is a supporter of CTE to help prepare students with the skills they need to thrive after school.
