Bonamici: Kids are Being Murdered in Schools, Prayers are Not Enough

February 15, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC [02/15/18] – Today Congresswoman Bonamici (D-OR) made the following remarks during the beginning of an Education committee hearing.

“We’ve all been praying in our own ways. We prayed after Sandy Hook. We prayed after Pulse. We prayed after Umpqua Community College. We prayed after Las Vegas. We prayed after the church shooting in Texas. And of course the nation is all praying in [our] own way after [the school shooting in Florida].

“But kids are still being murdered in schools. The prayers are not enough. We must act.

“I don’t always agree with [Education] Secretary DeVos, but I agree we have to have hearings to find out how we can keep our kids safe in school. I’m a mom and I can’t imagine what those parents are going through.”

Congresswoman Bonamici has long been an advocate for commonsense gun violence prevention laws. She is a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, and is a sponsor of bipartisan legislation to close the “gun show” loophole and require federal background checks for all gun sales. She is also a cosponsor of legislation to prevent domestic abusers from possessing firearms.
