Bonamici Praises Passage of Bill to Restore Strength of Voting Rights Act
WASHINGTON, DC [12/06/19] – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) praised the House passage of legislation that protects voting rights and addresses voter suppression.
The Voting Rights Advancement Act, H.R. 4, would restore and bolster the Voting Rights Act, which the Supreme Court significantly weakened in Shelby County v. Holder in 2013. H.R. 4 updates the enforcement mechanisms of the Voting Rights Act to protect voters from practices by states and localities that could threaten their voting rights.
"Elections are at the heart of our democracy, and we must make sure no one impedes the ability of citizens to express themselves at the ballot box, regardless of where they live," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "Oregon has been a strong defender of voting rights, but people in many states lack the protections we enjoy. Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, many state and local jurisdictions have suppressed the voices of the most vulnerable in their communities and have often targeted people of color. H.R. 4 will take a stand against voter suppression and restore access to the ballot box for all citizens."
