Bonamici Prepares Holiday Meals for Homebound Seniors with Meals on Wheels

December 23, 2015

Portland, Ore. [12/23/15] – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and her staff volunteered with Meals on Wheels People to prepare meals for homebound seniors in the First Congressional District. The meals will be delivered on December 24th to approximately 4,000 seniors.

“The holidays are a time for giving back to the community, and we enjoyed being part of the great work that Meals on Wheels People does to support seniors,” said Congresswoman Bonamici. “At this celebratory time of year, it’s important to remember that some of our neighbors are struggling with illness, aging, and poverty. When Congress is back in session, I will continue to advocate for reauthorizing the Older Americans Act. This important law funds vital programs like Meals on Wheels and services like family caregiver support and protection from elder abuse. Our seniors have contributed greatly to our country, and reauthorizing the Older Americans Act is an essential part of ensuring that they can live their lives with dignity.”

Since 1970, Meals on Wheels People has provided a nutritional and social lifeline for seniors through 30 meal sites in Multnomah, Washington, and Clark counties and Meals on Wheels food delivery to homebound seniors. With the help of nearly 8,000 volunteers, the nonprofit organization now serves approximately 5,000 meals daily and 1.3 million meals each year.
