Bonamici Raises Concerns about Arctic Drilling
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) released the following statement regarding drilling for oil in the Arctic.
“Our natural resources are precious. Oregonians understand this: residents and visitors enjoy the outdoors and many rely on our oceans, forests, and rich agricultural lands to earn a living. It is our responsibility to protect and sustain this planet. Arctic drilling is a destructive and potentially harmful way to extract oil. An oil spill in the Arctic poses significant risks. It would harm marine life, contaminate the eco-system, and it would be difficult if not impossible to clean up this pristine part of our world.
“Whether or not you agree with their tactics, the protesters on and under the St. John’s Bridge are raising awareness about these risks and about the problems with Arctic drilling. We should be pursuing alternative energy solutions rather than promoting risky oil drilling.”
