Bonamici Rejects Republican Budget; Votes for Alternative Version that will Help Working Families

October 5, 2017

Instructions in the bill could force the middle class to pay for corporate tax breaks

WASHINGTON, DC [10/05/17] – Today Congresswoman Bonamici released the following statement after voting against the Congressional Republican's budget bill, which lays the groundwork for massive tax reform through a process known as reconciliation.

"A budget should represent our values and priorities. The House-passed budget bloats defense spending and undermines support for education, infrastructure, veterans benefits, and research & development. The Republican budget also lays the groundwork for massive tax cuts for corporations and the top .01 percent of individuals, while putting an additional tax burden on many working families.

"The budget bill I supported would have increased investment in education and infrastructure, stabilized our health care system, and reversed the Trump Administration's cancellation of the Deferred Action for Early Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Unfortunately that version did not pass the House.

"And rather than drafting a tax plan behind closed doors, Congress should be working together to update the tax code in a way that grows the economy and helps working families. I hope that my colleagues decide to work across the aisle and propose a tax reform plan that accomplishes those goals."
