Bonamici on Secretary DeVos’ Decision to Give Defrauded Students Only Partial Relief: “Extremely Disappointing”

December 20, 2017

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Vice Ranking Member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, released the following statement in response to Secretary DeVos' announcement that the Department of Education will provide partial relief to many students who have been defrauded by predatory for-profit colleges.

"Today's announcement by Secretary DeVos to provide only partial relief to thousands of students defrauded by predatory for-profit colleges is extremely disappointing," said Congresswoman Bonamici. "This action cheats students out of their chance to repair their lives after being robbed of their American dream and saddled with worthless degrees or debt by for-profit colleges like Corinthian Colleges and ITT Tech. I urge Secretary DeVos to revisit this policy and stand up for students who have been defrauded by providing them with full loan forgiveness."

Congresswoman Bonamici is an outspoken advocate for student loan borrowers and has led efforts to protect students and taxpayers from predatory for-profit colleges. She has supported the gainful employment and borrower defense rules, which are aimed at reining in predatory for-profit colleges.
