Bonamici Secures $16.8M for Community Projects in NW Oregon

March 6, 2024

Federal funding will go to affordable housing, infrastructure improvements, emergency shelter, and more

WASHINGTON, DC [03/06/24] – Today Representative Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) helped the House pass spending bills that include $16,828,987 in Community Project Funding for Oregon’s 1st District. All 15 of the Community Projects the Congresswoman advocated for passed the House. The bills now advance to the Senate.

This funding responds directly to some of the most pressing needs in NW Oregon. The Congresswoman also successfully advocated for the funding package to include a $1 billion increase for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). It is expected to be signed into law by President Biden later this week.

“The Community Project Funding process provides a powerful opportunity to highlight specific project needs in NW Oregon,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “I focused on projects that address the top concerns I hear from Oregonians: housing affordability, aging infrastructure, climate change, and access to wraparound support services. These investments will improve lives and strengthen the economy.”

Rep. Bonamici championed funding for 15 projects that will directly benefit Oregon’s 1st District residents. These include:

  • $2,000,000 for Barbur Apartments (City of Portland)
  • $1,616,279 for Beaverton Downtown Loop (City of Beaverton)
  • $400,000 for Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction Expansion Project (Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission)
  • $850,000 for East Forest Grove Safety Improvement Project (City of Forest Grove)
  • $500,000 for Family Peace Center (Family Justice Center of Washington County)
  • $963,000 for OMEP Digital Workforce Transformation Project (Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership)
  • $1,000,000 for Pier 2 West Rehabilitation (Port of Astoria)
  • $500,000 for Reopening Sisters of the Road in Old Town/Chinatown Project (Sisters of the Road)
  • $280,000 for Scappoose Oregon Affordable Homeownership (Columbia County Habitat for Humanity)
  • $4,000,000 for Terminal 2 Redevelopment - Housing Innovation Campus (Port of Portland)
  • $1,000,000 for Three Rivers Fiber Broadband (Tillamook County)
  • $963,000 for Transportation Resource Hub (Portland State University)
  • $946,956 for Tualatin Hills Community Shelter Improvements, Emergency Operations, and Natural Hazard Mitigation (Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District)
  • $959,752 for Western Washington County Inflow and Infiltration Rehabilitation Project (Clean Water Services)
  • $850,000 for Year-Round Shelter Project (City of Hillsboro)

Under the rules of the House Appropriations Committee, Members of Congress could each submit up to 15 Community Project Funding requests for consideration during the fiscal year 2024 appropriations legislative process. The reformed and transparent Community Project Funding process allows Members of Congress to advocate for specific community financial support in a local, highly competitive process.
