Bonamici Stands Up Against Robocalls, Abusive Telephone Scams
WASHINGTON, DC [7/25/19] – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) praised the passage of the bipartisan Stopping Bad Robocalls Act, which establishes needed safeguards to finally put a stop to unwanted robocalls.
The number of robocalls has dramatically increased in recent years, with an estimated 47.8 billion robocalls placed nationwide in 2018 alone. The Stopping Bad Robocalls Act would direct the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to issue rules that protect consumers from unwanted calls and texts, mandate recordkeeping to make sure callers respect consumer consent and privacy, and prevent companies from circumventing these rules.
Bonamici is a co-sponsor of the legislation, which passed the House Wednesday.
“Oregonians don’t like robocalls! I frequently hear about how unwanted robocalls & telephone scams cause frustration and, in some cases, economic loss,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “The bipartisan Stopping Bad Robocalls Act will finally put an end to these aggravating calls. I'm happy to report that the House passed this important legislation. I call on my colleagues in the Senate to quickly do the same so we can provide overdue relief to the families & individuals who receive far too many robocalls.”
