Bonamici Statement on Passage of Short-Term Transportation Funding

May 19, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) made the following statement after the House voted to pass a short-term extension of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) law, which authorizes federal highway, public transit, highway safety, and other safety programs.

“One of the best ways to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and help businesses grow is to invest in transportation projects that strengthen our roads, bridges, and transit systems. Short-term extensions of transportation funding create uncertainty and threaten the safety and quality of our roads and bridges, and crumbling infrastructure is dangerous for our country and its residents. We should be investing in long-term funding for a multi-modal transportation bill. It’s an investment that creates jobs now and helps maintain the free flow of goods and people for decades.

“Today’s short-term extension continues uncertainty for our states and country. With just days before funding expires, however, I supported this bill so that no projects are shut down and workers can stay on the job. I strongly urge my colleagues to pass a long-term extension of these vital programs as soon as possible.”
