Bonamici Statement on South Carolina Church Shooting

“The horrific attack on the Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina leaves me devastated and heartbroken. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Charleston and across the country who are grieving from the loss of their family and friends. Based on what we know about the attack, it appears that it was not merely a hate crime, but an act of terror fueled by racism.

“I long for the day when African-Americans no longer need to live under fear of violence committed because of their race.

“And in coming weeks and months, I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to both confront systemic racism in this country and to seek policy solutions that end gun violence.”
