Bonamici Votes Against the Ryan Budget
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici voted no on the 2015 Ryan budget today, calling the legislation harmful to the economic recovery and the country’s middle class.
“This budget cuts nutritional programs, child care, and housing assistance,” Bonamici said. “There’s no investment in the middle class; instead the proposal indiscriminately slashes programs like Head Start and Pell grants in order to make way for large tax cuts for the wealthy.”
The House passed the legislation 219-205. The Ryan budget cuts about $5 trillion in spending over 10 years while proposing major changes to Medicaid, Medicare, and a number of other federal programs.
A recent report estimates the budget proposal will cost the country more than 1 million jobs in 2015, while pushing up to 170,000 children off of Head Start and forcing seniors to pay more for preventative care under a voucher system.
“The proposal puts the safety and security of some of our most vulnerable members of society in jeopardy,” Bonamici said. “We should be working on bipartisan legislation that helps our economy recover and gets Americans back to work.”
