Bonamici Votes For Long-Term Multi-Modal Transportation Bill

December 3, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC [12/03/15]—Today, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) made the following statement after the House passed a five year extension of legislation that authorizes federal highway, public transit, highway safety, and other safety programs. The bill now heads to the Senate for final passage before being sent to the President’s desk to be signed into law. Bonamici included an amendment to designate the Newberg-Dundee Bypass Route as a High Priority Corridor to raise the prominence of the project.

“When we make long-term investments in transportation and infrastructure, we stimulate the economy, create jobs, and help drive commerce,” said Congresswoman Bonamici. “Today, Congress put differences aside and found common ground to strengthen transportation systems in Northwest Oregon and our nation. This five year bill will help build and maintain our roads and bridges, while improving freight rail and public transit services. The sustained funding gives Oregon and local counties the certainty they need to start new construction projects and create comprehensive transportation plans.

“This bill includes my amendment to raise the prominence of the Newberg-Dundee Bypass Route by designating it as a High Priority Corridor. Designating the Bypass as a High Priority Corridor will help our region make the case for continued funding and support. The Newberg-Dundee Bypass will help ease congestion for Yamhill County residents and visitors, as well as make it easier for wine and agricultural industries to move their goods to market.

“Additionally, I’m pleased to see Congress finally moving to reopen the Export-Import Bank. The Ex-Im Bank pays for itself and plays a crucial role in helping Oregon businesses—big and small—compete and succeed in the global marketplace.

“Finally, I thank Ranking Member Peter DeFazio for his leadership in moving this bipartisan effort forward to so we can get back to work building and maintaining our nation’s roads and bridges.”
