Congresswoman Bonamici Statement on 42nd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

January 22, 2015

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) released the following statement following the passage of H.R. 7 the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2015.”

“On the 42nd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and during the first month of a new session of Congress, the leaders of the House of Representatives have made it a priority to limit women’s access to reproductive health care. Today House leaders brought to the floor H.R. 7 the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2015.” This bill would restrict access to abortions for millions and millions of women in this country.

“Under current law no federal funds can be used for abortions, but this bill goes further. It would permanently deny access to abortions to women who receive health benefits or subsidies through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), disproportionately hurting low-income women.

“On the anniversary of a landmark case that secures a constitutional right to abortion, Congress should commit to reducing unwanted pregnancies, making family planning services available, and making sure abortions are safe, legal, and rare. We need to stop pursuing policies that deny women access to health care and work together on legislation that will stimulate our economy, create jobs, and supporting working families.”
