House Passes Bonamici Plan to Extend Aviation Consumer Advocate, Encourage Development of Low-Carbon Fuel Alternatives

July 20, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC [7/20/23] – Today the House passed bipartisan legislation to update America’s aviation system that included provisions led by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) to aid consumers and reduce airlines’ carbon footprint.

The Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act is a comprehensive reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration that will make flying safer and smoother and grow the aviation workforce while fostering innovation. It contains an extension of the Aviation Consumer Advocate position, which was first created based on an amendment Bonamici led to help consumers resolve problems that arise with airlines.

The legislation also features an amendment Bonamici introduced to help address the climate crisis by encouraging the research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of low-carbon alternative fuels like next-generation feedstocks, biofuels, and bioderived chemicals, to facilitate the United States’ sustainability and competitiveness in aviation.

“We have an opportunity to make flying easier for consumers and better for our planet,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “I’m glad this bipartisan update of the Federal Aviation Administration includes provisions I led to spur the development of new alternative fuels that have the potential to reduce carbon emissions, and extend the Aviation Consumer Advocate’s position to secure travel with dignity for everyone. Flying is essential to our economy and lives, and these improvements will help our aviation system meet the needs of our future.”
