Rep. Bonamici Attends White House Signing of Jobs Bill

July 22, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici attended the bill signing of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) today at the White House, and emphasized the jobs and economic boost it will bring to the country.

“The workforce development provisions in this bill will benefit the country’s workers and businesses,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “The training will help bridge the skills gap and get more people back to work while providing the nation’s businesses with a workforce that will improve productivity and efficiency. I’ve spoken with business owners and workforce organizations about the importance of a qualified workforce; it’s a crucial ingredient in the effort to rebuild our economy.”

WIOA includes multiple provisions to streamline worker training programs and align them with the needs of local businesses. Portland-based Worksystems provides training for in-demand occupations to help local businesses find qualified employees and put Oregonians back to work.

“Worksystems is incredibly excited about the investment WIOA makes in the country’s workforce,” Executive Director Andrew McGough said. “With the passage of this bill into law, workforce development programs like ours can continue to strengthen the workforce in Washington and Multnomah Counties while helping local businesses find applicants with the specialized skills they need to increase productivity.”

WIOA will help prepare employees for the 21st century economy. Its provisions will benefit low-income young people and dislocated workers, but will also make use of current infrastructure like our public libraries, where jobseekers can go to receive specialized training and other assistance.

“Helping Americans find stable employment should be a top priority in Congress. The signing of this bill into law shows that there is strong bipartisan support for workforce investment, and it highlights the crucial role of workforce programs in creating and filling jobs,” Congresswoman Bonamici said. “A skilled workforce leads to more productive businesses and stimulates economic growth. I’m proud to support this legislation and eager to see how it will put more people back to work and bring them lasting support.”
