Rep. Bonamici Denounces Supreme Court’s Decision in Hobby Lobby Case

June 30, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling granting Hobby Lobby’s request for an exemption to the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that insurance plans cover contraception.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby is a step backward for women in the workplace. A for-profit company’s refusal to cover certain contraceptives for religious reasons violates the rights of women. Closely-held corporations employ thousands of people. Although the owners of these businesses have a right to their own religious beliefs, they should not be able to tell their employees what kind of health care they can and cannot receive in the name of religion.

“As a society, we should be doing all we can to prevent unwanted pregnancies. This decision takes us in the wrong direction.”
