Rep. Bonamici Statement Commemorating Labor Day

September 1, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) released the following statement commemorating Labor Day.

“I’m proud to represent a district in Oregon, the first state to officially recognize Labor Day. Today we recognize the contributions of the hard-working American men and women who did so much over the years to establish rights for workers to a minimum wage, to work reasonable hours, and to stay safe on the job. And today we thank all of those who continue to build our country’s infrastructure and who help our economy grow. The strength and innovation of America’s workforce has long been our nation’s key to success.

“Although today we celebrate the contributions of our workers, we must also recommit to policies that continue to build the middle class. We need more living wage jobs, better workforce programs to increase new opportunities, and we must end discrimination against the long-term unemployed. We must continue to advocate for a higher federal minimum wage, greater workplace protections, equal pay for equal work, and access to affordable childcare. The economy is improving, and we can boost its growth by providing our workforce with more opportunities to create fulfilling, prosperous lives.”
