WASHINGTON, DC [06/23/22] – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Chair of the Education and Labor Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Human Services, issued the following statement on proposed changes to Title IX.

"The Department of Education's proposed Title IX rule is long overdue, and awelcome departure from the previous Administration's discriminatory and harmful misinterpretation of the law. Under former Secretary DeVos, the Department of Education weakened policies designed to protect students by diminishing the rights of sexual assault survivors and failing to enforce the civil rights of LGBTQIA+ students. I consistently led my colleagues in pushing back against those efforts. Today, on the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the Biden Administration's new regulation restores the original intent of this foundational law by guaranteeing all students equal access to educational opportunities, programs, and activities regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It is past time for every student's fundamental human rights to be protected by federal law, and I applaud this Administration for making those rights a priority in its updated Title IX regulations."

Bonamici repeatedly denounced the previous Administration's changes to Title IX, pressed former Sec. DeVos on her failures, and led the effort to reinstate protections for transgender students.
