WASHINGTON, DC – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) released the following statement after voting to vacate the Speaker of the House.

“Before the vote today, the U.S. House of Representatives had only used the process to vacate the Speaker of the House once. That was more than a century ago, and the motion failed. This is a serious moment in the history of this institution.”

“Today I voted with my House Democratic colleagues, and several Republicans, to remove Speaker McCarthy from his position because I cannot in good conscience support a Speaker who has consistently empowered his conference’s most extreme members, many of whom refuse to accept the results of a fair and free election. He has stood behind devastating cuts to public education and other government programs that help working families, like SNAP, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, and Head Start.”

“My priority is —and always has been— improving the lives of the Oregonians I represent. That’s true whether I serve in the majority or minority. I’ve passed bipartisan legislation in a divided Congress before, but we cannot address our nation’s most pressing issues if House Republicans continue to pursue an extreme policy agenda.”
