Bonamici Statement on Veto of Congressional Review Act of Secretary DeVos’ 2019 Borrower Defense Rule
June 1, 2020
The Borrower Defense rule was designed to provide defrauded students with the debt relief they are entitled to under the Higher Education Act. Instead of protecting students, Secretary DeVos rewrote the rule to make it nearly impossible for future students who are victimized by deceptive institutions to get the relief they deserve.
Congress recognized the harm this new rule would cause students and taxpayers, and we joined together to pass a bipartisan rejection of Secretary DeVos' rewrite of the Borrower Defense rule. It is outrageous that President Trump vetoed this legislation. We must once again come together in a bipartisan fashion to override this harmful new rule before it takes effect. I will continue to do all that I can to protect students and borrowers from unscrupulous institutions.
