Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and Congressman Aaron Schock (R-IL) are leading an effort to add language to a reauthorization of the America COMPETES Act to recognize and support the value of integrating arts and design into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The duo, along with 26 other House members from both sides of the aisle, today sent a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology urging inclusion of provisions supportive of STEAM.
Washington, D.C.—Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today announced that she has been selected to serve on the U.S. House Education and the Workforce Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, & Pensions (HELP). She will depart the subcommittee on Workforce Protections, but remain on the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training.
“I look forward to working with members of the HELP subcommittee to protect and strengthen the employment and labor laws that are essential to well-being of Oregon’s working families,” said Bonamici.
Beaverton, Ore.— Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today called on members of the House and Senate Budget Conference Committee to reverse cuts to federal education funding caused by the “sequestration” provisions of the Budget Control Act. Bonamici emphasized her disapproval with the cuts during a visit to Tigard’s Durham Elementary School, which receives federal Title I funding to lower class sizes and provide reading interventions for students in need of extra support. Title I funding goes to schools with a high percentage of low-income students.
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today voted for the Senate’s bipartisan student loan compromise that will lower undergraduate student loan interest rates for subsidized Stafford loans from 6.8 to 3.86 percent for 2013. Future rates will be calculated annually based on the government’s cost of borrowing, but are capped at 8.25 percent for undergraduate loans and are fixed for the life of the loan.
