Higher education leaders discussed the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision, which has already led to several states passing strict abortion bans, with U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici during a roundtable discussion at Portland State University on Friday, Aug. 19.

Bonamici, a pro-choice Democrat and alumna of Lane Community College and the University of Oregon, said she shares students' concerns.

College employees and students from around Oregon met up with Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Oregon, on Friday to talk about changes to Title IX, the federal law concerning sex discrimination in schools, and how the recent Supreme Court decision regarding abortion could affect campuses.

"There's a lot of uncertainty right now because of the Supreme Court opinion and laws varying across states, and our colleges and universities and students need clarity," Bonamici said.

[06/23/2022] WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswomen Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) today introduced the Stop Anti-Abortion Disinformation (SAD) Act, to crack down on false advertising related to abortion services. This bill directs the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to prohibit deceptive or misleading advertising related to the provision of abortion services.

The nation's most restrictive abortion ban has resumed in Texas, now that a federal appeals court has overruled a decision from a lower court to pause the ban. "I was in high school before Roe versus Wade," Rep Bonamici said. "This was the day of back alley abortions and self-help."

Bonamici recounted the days before abortion was legal and the unsafe, dangerous methods women would use to end a pregnancy. "What they resorted to in their desperation was often life-threatening," Bonamici said. "We must, we absolutely must, protect the right to safe, legal abortion."
