U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici visited Beaverton's Arts & Communication Magnet Academy, where it all begins for some local artists, as part of a tour of local art programs Wednesday, Oct. 19.

"We started with the youth, started with students who go into making community artists and a creative community," Bonamici said Thursday, Oct. 20.

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici stopped by Astoria on Monday to present a check that will assist in funding a city project to prevent landslides.

"This was a project that was worthy of advocacy because it really is about saving lives," the Oregon Democrat said. "The hospital and the homes that are in this area could be severely damaged if (or) when a landslide happens and to be able to partner with the community here and get the funding to help prevent a landslide will be good for the hospital, good for the community and likely save lives."

While the revamped public service loan forgiveness program and the new general debt cancellation have given many college grads hope, Rep. Bonamici said lawmakers are working to prevent future borrowers from incurring massive debt for a degree.

"We're working on college affordability. A lot of what we're talking about today is a short-term solution, but we need long-term solutions as well, and we're working on that in the Education and Labor Committee," Bonamici said.

The program offers free preschool to children across the county, aiming to fill the gaps in the childcare system. At a panel held at Portland State University last Friday, local and state leaders met to discuss how to move it forward.

Bonamici said manufactured housing plays an essential role in addressing the current housing crisis, but it needs to be affordable for families and individuals.

Members of a U.S. House Education and Labor Committee panel on Thursday questioned experts and leaders of youth rehabilitation programs about how the federal government could invest in programs to prevent kids from becoming incarcerated.

"Although the juvenile justice system is intended to rehabilitate — not punish — young offenders, data shows that the more a young person interacts with the juvenile justice system, the more likely they are to reenter the system and struggle throughout life," the panel's chair, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Oregon, said in her opening statement.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi heard Oregon panelists discuss how recent federal legislation will promote carbon-free energy, create thousands of skilled jobs and help communities cope with the onset of climate change.

Pelosi was flanked by two Oregon Democrats who made major contributions to that and other recent legislation during the discussion Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Energy Trust of Oregon offices in Portland. They are Rep. Earl Blumenauer of Portland, a senior member of the tax-writing committee, and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici of Beaverton, who sits on the science committee.
