Democratic members of Oregon’s congressional delegation say they are looking for ways to keep Trump in check.
“I want to say to concerned Oregonians, we are going to do all we can to stop this short sighted, dangerous anti-science agenda,” U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici said.
Bonamici said the grant reductions would kill people. “People will die if Trump and Musk go through with these cuts,” she said.
U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley joined Rep. Suzanne Bonamici in calling the proposal illegal since Congress already approved the funds. Merkley said the cuts have “life and death stakes.”
The opponents of the cuts noted that research advances at OHSU led to Gleevec, which made leukemia a manageable disease, as well as a new blood test to detect pancreatic cancer and promising research on a potential universal flu vaccine, among many others.
"We need to learn from the lessons of Martin Luther King Jr., to stand up for civil rights across the country, and I truly, truly hope that enough people here in Oregon and across the country join me in standing up for civil rights," Bonamici said.
Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici told KGW, "In December I urged Providence & the Oregon Nurses Association to come together in good faith and negotiate a fair contract that provides competitive wages & safe staffing levels so nurses & other frontline health care workers can provide the high-quality patient care Oregonians deserve & expect.
Rep. Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon: I still have seared in my memory the images of Capitol Police officers and other people being beaten. People lost their lives. … It’s not like somebody made this up. There are videos. There are pictures. There are statements. There’s a record of this. And there were people that were convicted by juries of their peers.
“We want to be clear: our concerns with the implementation do not arise from any hesitation about pursuing ambitious, comprehensive policies to protect critical habitat for endangered species,” Bonamici, an Oregon Democrat who represents the North Coast, and other members of the Oregon delegation wrote. “It is the role of government to craft and implement responsible policy that follows the science, but it’s also important to fully resource the changes that must be made.”
Native American Heritage Month is coming to a close and the Portland Art Museum is continuing the celebration.
On Sunday they offered free admission and special programs to celebrate their exhibition of artwork from Native American artist Jeffrey Gibson.
Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici and Senator Ron Wyden were in attendance and spoke during a ceremony highlighting the museum’s celebration.
U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Oregon, whose congressional district includes St. Helens, put out a statement Friday reading in part:
"The allegations that have been made to date reveal an alarming pattern and all those involved in the failures that have led to this crisis must be held accountable for their actions and for the harm caused by their actions. As a senior member of the Education and Workforce committee, a parent, a policymaker, and an Oregonian, I will assist and support the community.”
