Attendees at Monday’s discussion talked about what changes they would like to see with the federal government’s student loan system to make it work better for students. Accountability and simplification were the keywords thrown out again and again.
“I talk all the time with students who, even though they have enough (from various sources) to have their tuition covered, do not have enough to live on to pay their rent or go for food,” she said.
Rural Utilities Service Administrator Andrew Berke, along with Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore), went to the Countryman Estates in Forest Grove, the future site of Habitat for Humanity’s eight planned new homes.
Berke said the USDA has a vested interest in this kind of project and is offering up more than $300,000 to make it happen.
“The extra money gave them financial breathing room. Instead of deciding between rent and child care, school supplies or food on the table, families could cover their immediate needs and think about the future in a positive way,” Bonamici said.
“This is a deliberate attack on the autonomy of patients to make their own decisions with their healthcare providers and with their families,” said U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.). “At the core of the case is the abortion and miscarriage management pill mifepristone — often taken with another drug to end early pregnancy.”
“We know that medical decisions must be based on science, not politics. They must be made by patients, not politicians,” said Bonamici, a Democrat from Beaverton who has been in the House since 2012.
“I am a member of Congress. I signed up to make tough decisions. But one decision I should never make is whether and when someone who is not me should bear a child.”
