It's no secret that Oregon is in desperate need of bolstered childcare. Every single county in the Beaver State was deemed a childcare desert for infants and toddlers in a 2012 Oregon State University report, long before COVID-19 put the issue on the forefront. Childcare providers and advocates say the problem has only worsened in recent years. U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici reiterated this point during her quarterly Oregon Child Care Advisory Board meeting on Monday, Dec. 13.
Oregon's Congressional delegation recently sent a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Office of Management and Budget urging funding for the state's port infrastructure as the Army Corps implements the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (IIJA). The letter was signed by U.S. Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) and House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Peter DeFazio (D-OR), and U.S. Reps. Cliff Bentz (R-OR), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), and Kurt Schrader (D-OR).

The Recovering America's Wildlife Act would help us create good jobs for today while protecting our state's wildlife heritage for tomorrow. This session, we hope the entire Oregon Congressional delegation from both sides of the aisle will join Representatives DeFazio, Blumenauer and Bonamici in championing this groundbreaking bill and helping it become the law of the land.
A long-time program promised to forgive federal student loans for people who have worked in public service and made loan payments for 10 years. But that's not the way the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, or PSLF, has worked for borrowers. "The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program passed back in 2007, and it was really intended to encourage students to pursue public service, and the benefit was that discharge of the balance after paying for 10 years," Rep. Bonamici said during a webinar she hosted late Monday afternoon.
As the executive director of Oregon Tradeswomen, Kelly Kupcak wants to see other women — and people of color — have the same opportunities for apprenticeships that helped her raise two sons as a union heavy equipment operator. "I am living proof of what pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeships can do," Kupcak said at an online forum organized by U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici. Bonamici, a Democrat from Beaverton and the 1st District of northwest Oregon, is co-chairwoman of the Bipartisan Apprenticeship Caucus and a member of the House Education and Labor Committee.
Oregon Rep. Suzanne Bonamici visited shops in Northwest Portland to highlight Small Business Saturday on Nov. 27. Bonamici said she once worked at her mom's small business, so she understands the challenges in keeping a business going. "I know how hard small business owners and their employees work," Bonamici said. "Today is a day to celebrate that and give them support, because this has been a really tough couple of years for them."
